Caprabo and the Consortium for Waste Management of Vallès Oriental join the reuse of glass bottles
The supermarket chain and the Consortium are added to the pilot test of the reWINE project, an initiative that aims to demonstrate the viability of a sustainable system for the collection, cleaning, and reuse of glass bottles in the Catalan wine industry. So far, reWINE has already recovered more than 50.000 bottles of wine, which is equivalent to avoiding approximately 20 tons of glass container waste.
Caprabo will participate from tomorrow, November 5, in the pilot test of the reWINE project, focused on the reuse of wine bottles and co-financed by the EU through its LIFE program.
Consumers who buy bottles of the wines Ètim El Viaje, from the Falset Marçà Cooperative, and Viña Sol, from Bodegas Torres, will be able to return the bottles to three green points managed by the Consortium for Waste Management of Vallès Oriental and participate in a raffle to win a wine experience. The bottles of these two wines will be identified with a reWINE label.
The initiative will be developed in four shops of Caprabo and three green points in the municipalities of Granollers Sur, Mollet del Vallés and Caldes de Montbui until January 2020.
Currently, in Catalonia 147 million bottles of wine are consumed every year, 43% of which is not recycled. Since September 2016, reWINE has recovered more than 50.000 bottles of wine in the Catalan territory, a figure that is estimated to prevent 20 tons of waste. In addition, the preliminary studies developed in the framework of the project show that the reuse of bottles supposes a savings between 0.56 kg of CO2 and a 2.3 kg of CO2 per bottle after 8 uses.
The objective of the pilot test is to reach 100.000 bottles by January 31, 2020. Besides the new additions of Caprabo and the Consortium for Waste Management of Vallès Oriental, six Catalan wineries -the Cooperativa Falset Marçà, Bodegas Torres, Albet i Noya, La Viñeta, Talcomraja and Vins Pravi-, about thirty shops and 50 restaurants are already part of the reWINE pilot test.
